Ghibli exhibit to host exclusive menu

The brand new upcoming Studio Ghibli exhibit, titled “The Great Ghibli Exhibition~From Nausicaä to Red Turtle~”, has announced a brand-new exclusive menu to go alongside the exhibit! The exhibit will open on July 7th in Tokyo, and will begin serving these unique foods at the Museum Café THE SUN in the exhibition. The menu offers a wide variety of options, each of them themed after Studio Ghibli characters from the company’s years of animated films. Some of the food options include a Soot Sprite black hamburger, Totoro matcha shaved ice dessert, a Nausicaä-themed parfait, and even the sunny-side-up egg on toast from Castle in the Sky! The exhibit will also feature a wide variety of Ghibli memorabilia and souvenirs on top of these delicious treats, making this exhibit a must-see for any Ghibli fan!

Pokémon Go phone game coming in July

After several months of field tests and teasers, the Pokémon Go phone game will finally be released this July! The new game, which is specifically designed for use with iOS and Android products, strives to bring the world of Pokémon to life by letting users go out and catch Pokemon in real life! Using your phone as an AR device, you can go out and find wild Pokémon in the real world, capturing them and training them as your very own. You will also be able to create Pokémon “gyms” by joining a group of other Pokémon Go users and battling your team against theirs. Alongside the July release date, Nintendo has announced that a separate wristband add-on will be available for $35, which will allow Pokémon Go users to catch wild Pokémon without having to use their phones! Nintendo has also said that they are planning more phone-based games in the future, including Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem titles.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV trailer released

Video game and entertainment company Square-Enix has had its hands full with the latest entry in the internationally renowned Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy XV. Scheduled to release on September 30th, the new video game has a number of side projects that will tie directly into the game’s expansive universe, including several spinoff games. On top of this, Square-Enix has finally shown off the first trailer for a new movie in the XV universe, titled “Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV”! The movie, which will be rendered entirely in CG like their 2005 movie, “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children”, the movie will follow King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII, father of the XV video game’s protagonist, Noctis Lucis Caelum, as well as Nyx Ulric, a member of Regis’ Kingsglaive unit. The film is scheduled to release in Japanese theaters on July 9th, with an English release soon to come afterwards. Check out the teaser below to see Kingsglaive in action!

The sixth annual edition of the Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale in Japan has drawn international attention since its opening on July 26th, decorating the Niigata highlands with a wide variety of artwork and installation pieces. The Triennale is designed to be a return to the rural art festival, shunning glorified urban art exhibitions in order to reintroduce visitors to art in the environment. This year’s Triennale is bigger than ever, boasting 380 works from 350 different artists from all over the world, including new works from artists like Yayoi Kusama, Cai Guo-Qiang, Paola Pivi, Annette Messager, Shilpa Gupta, Tadashi Kawamata, Lee Bul, Shinji Ohmaki, Navin Rawanchaikul, and Noe Aoki.

The works on display range from huge installation pieces to transformed barns, decorated train cabs, found art, optical illusions, and more. Along the way, visitors are encouraged to visit local cafés and enjoy the rural Niigata environments and atmosphere. Since its founding in 2000, the exhibit has been a huge inspiration for artists across the globe, and has spawned similar art movements in China and Thailand. Starting this June, TOMODACHI has been holding weekend workshops in collaboration with our friends at MT Tape! MT tape is a unique brand of washi rice paper masking tape that can be used to decorate and design anything you can imagine, and TOMODACHI is helping fans and visitors explore the possibilities of MT Tape with our free weekend workshops!

Available at both our Mall of America and Rosedale locations every Saturday, creative minds will be given a free milk carton cutout as well as same of a variety of MT Tape colors to play with and enjoy. Our first workshop this past weekend was a huge success, with visitors creating tons of fun and cool designs with MT Tape! These workshops will be available every Saturday until August 22nd, so make sure to stop by and check out MT Tape with us!

This summer, TOMODACHI is bringing design to the Twin Cities in a big way, thanks to mt tape! TOMODACHI has collaborated with mt in order to bring a number of events, workshops, and competitions to our Mall of America store as well as Rosedale store this summer, and we’re excited to share them with all of you!

What is mt tape? mt is a brand of washi rice paper masking tape produced by Japanese company Kamoi Kakoshi, whom have been designing specialty paper adhesives since 1923. mt tape comes in a huge variety of colors, patterns, and styles, and is designed to be easily aligned and repositioned for use in crafts, interior decoration, and graphic design. Consumers and artists worldwide use the tape for a wide variety of purposes, ranging from arts and crafts projects to large-scale art exhibitions! Now, TOMODACHI is proud to be presenting mt tape this summer through a number of workshops and competitions!

Throughout the summer months, TOMODACHI will be hosting workshops every Satuday from June 27th to August 22nd, and will be demonstrating and teaching visitors how to experience and work with mt tape firsthand! This is FREE workshop and samples will be available at the event, so anyone can come participate!

Along with these free workshops, customers may opt to join our mt tape competition, in which TOMODACHI will hand out gift card prizes to our favorite entries! In order to participate in the competition, customers must purchase a special $5 template from either our MoA or Rosedale location, which can be customized, cut, and folded. Customers who purchase the template will also receive 25% off of mt tape for the entry! Entries must be submitted by August 22nd to qualify, and can be entered at either of our locations. The grand prize will be a $300 TOMODACHI gift card, while second and third place will receive a $100 card and $50 card respectively.

TOMODACHI will also be hosting an art event on August 29th, in which we will be presenting a number of mt-tape inspired art pieces. The pieces at the exhibition will be specially created by artists around the Twin Cities, and will truly show off the possibilities behind mt tape as an art form as well as decoration. The winners of our workshop contest will also be shown off at the event. Mario cafes open in Japan this summer

Video game company Nintendo’s mascot Mario, one of the most popular characters in the world, will soon be celebrating his 30th anniversary, and Nintendo is planning on celebrating it in a big way with the launch of several limited-time cafes across Japan later this month! In a collaboration with Tower Records, Nintendo will open these cafes, titled “Super Mario Bros x Tower Records Cafe”, in Shibuya, Omotesandou, and Ebisu. Each of these cafes will serve customers a selection of limited-edition Mario-themed foods and refreshments, along with one of 8 complimentary collectables with each purchase.

On top of a shared menu, each location will have its own unique themed dish, urging fans to visit all three locations for the full experience. the Shibuya location will offer a Blooper Squid Ink Pasta, while the Ebisu location will serve a spicy Koopa Taco Rice. Finally, the Omotesandou cafe will host a Super Star-shaped omelet rice dish! Each cafe will only be open for a limited time, with the Shibuya cafe opening from June 23rd to July 1st, and the Omotesandou and Ebisu locations opening from June 22nd to July 5th.

Dragon Ball airs brand-new anime series in July

Following the critical success of the past two Dragon Ball movies, television studio Fuji TV has announced that a brand-new Dragon Ball anime series is in the works! Originally created by artist Akira Toriyama in 1984 in manga format, the eventual anime adaptation as “Dragon Ball” and “Dragon Ball Z” garnered worldwide popularity, and multiple spinoff movies, video games, comics, and more. The new series, titled “Dragon Ball Super”, will follow the story of the two recent movies, “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Dogs”, and “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F”.

The debut of “Dragon Ball Super” will mark the first new anime entry in the Dragon Ball franchise since “Dragon Ball GT” in 1996! Details about Super’s story are scarce at the moment, though it was announced that Toriyama himself is working on the anime as writer and character designer. “Dragon Ball Super” is set to hit Japanese TVs this July, and news will surely arrive about worldwide releases shortly afterwards.

Toy manufacturing and distributing company Jakks Pacific has been pleasing video game fans of all ages with its World of Nintendo line of figures since early 2014. Featuring classic Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, and more, Jakks will now delve into retro gaming territory with the newly announced line of World of Nintendo plushes! These plushes will feature iconic Nintendo characters in classic 8-bit pixel style, and will debut with plush representations of Mario, Luigi, and Link in sprite form.
