Pokemon: The First Movie returns to theaters

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the classic Nintendo franchise, the original 1998 Pokémon film, “Pokémon: The First Movie”, will be making a grand return to theaters nationwide! The re-screening of the popular children’s movie will take place at 200 select Cinemark locations across the United States, and will take place from October 29th to November 1st. Both “Pokémon: The First Movie” and the animated short “Pikachu’s Vacation” will air, similarly to the movie’s original release nearly two decades ago. The movie re-release comes as a part of a year-long celebration of the Pokémon franchise, including the release of the original Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow games on the Nintendo 3DS system, along with the Pokémon Go smartphone app and the upcoming release of the brand-new Pokémon Sun and Moon 3DS games in November. Make sure to keep an eye out for participating Cinemark locations this Halloween to take part in this nostalgic experience!

Months of speculation and rumors surrounding Nintendo’s newest console, code-named the NX, will finally come to an end today, thanks to the official announcement of the Nintendo Switch! The console acts like a hybrid of Nintendo’s home console line and handheld series, allowing users to play the Switch both at home and on the go! This is accomplished thanks to a variety of innovative features, like a docking stand that the Switch plugs into at home to play on your TV, along with a separate slide-out tablet to play the console in a handheld format. The controller, titled the Joy-Con, is also widely modular, allowing the controller to be split apart from its at-home configuration and attached to the portable tablet to create a handheld screen. The console unveil also showed off a number of new games, including the upcoming Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon, on top of a brand new Mario title! Stay at a Mario-themed room in Portugal

Tourists in Lisbon, Portugal are now being offered the chance to stay at a fanciful Mario-themed hotel room, thanks to the efforts of one dedicated fan! The room was put together by programmer and homeowner André Farinha, who wanted to share his love for Nintendo and its classic icon with tourists and locals alike. The room is decked to the brim with a variety of Nintendo merchandise and memorabilia, including built-in gaming stations for Nintendo’s 3DS and WiiU consoles! Also included in the room are a variety of the collectible Amiibo mini-figures, murals, posters, wallpapers, and even a decorated bathroom! Though the room cost Farinha over $11,000 to furnish and customize, this fun getaway can be rented on Airbnb for the low cost of just under $40 a night!

Detective Pikachu movie in the works

Legendary Films will be partnering with Nintendo in order to create a new Pokémon live-action movie based on the Nintendo 3DS game, “Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo”! The film, which was announced last month, has recently unveiled that scriptwriters Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch will be working on the film’s script! Perlman is best known for her work with Marvel films “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, while Hirsch is the creator of Disney’s popular “Gravity Falls” cartoon. Great Detective Pikachu follows the story of a talking Pikachu who works to solve mysteries around town with his human partner and sidekick, Tim Goodman. The game itself released in Japan this February, with no plans announced as of yet for an international release. With the newest iteration of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon franchise coming this fall with Pokémon Sun and Moon, Nintendo has announced a new interactive toy will be released alongside the new game: The Z-Ring! The Z-Ring, which will be manufactured by TOMY, will be able to connect with your copy of Pokémon Sun and Moon, and will activate whenever you use one of the new Z-Moves in-game. In response to this, the ring will light up and vibrate, along with play sound effects to complement the action going on in your game! The Z-Ring can also be customized, allowing the user to swap colored gems to fit their Pokémon’s type. The Z-Ring is scheduled to release alongside Pokémon Sun and Moon on November 18th, and will surely add a level of immersion never before seen to your Pokémon experience!

Fans of retro video games everywhere will be excited to hear that Nintendo has announced a brand-new miniature NES system! The tiny-sized console won’t be able to use actual NES carts, but will rather come pre-loaded with 30 NES classics, allowing gamers to re-explore the best of the best from the 1980s console. The list includes titles like Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Pac-Man, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, and many more. The new release, unlike the full-sized original NES, will be compatible with HD televisions, and the controller will even be able to be plugged into Nintendo’s Wiimote for use on the WiiU! The NES Classic Edition will be available on November 11th for $59.99, so keep your eyes peeled for this cool retro release this holiday season!

As a continuation of last year’s Super Mario-themed Hot Wheels line, which featured box art from a number of Mario games on the tiny collectible vehicles, Mattel has announced a new wave of Super Mario Hot Wheels! This new line of vehicles will be themed around the characters of the Mario universe themselves, and will feature vehicular representations of Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser. These unique vehicles will be released in limited amounts later this summer, so Nintendo fans should make sure to keep an eye out for these cool little Nintendo cars!

Pokémon Go phone game coming in July

After several months of field tests and teasers, the Pokémon Go phone game will finally be released this July! The new game, which is specifically designed for use with iOS and Android products, strives to bring the world of Pokémon to life by letting users go out and catch Pokemon in real life! Using your phone as an AR device, you can go out and find wild Pokémon in the real world, capturing them and training them as your very own. You will also be able to create Pokémon “gyms” by joining a group of other Pokémon Go users and battling your team against theirs. Alongside the July release date, Nintendo has announced that a separate wristband add-on will be available for $35, which will allow Pokémon Go users to catch wild Pokémon without having to use their phones! Nintendo has also said that they are planning more phone-based games in the future, including Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem titles.

Nintendo announces Zelda: Breath of the Wild

At this year’s E3, or Electronic Entertainment Expo for short, Nintendo had a huge focus on its highly anticipated upcoming Zelda title, and it did not disappoint. The game, unveiled to be titled “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”, will be the newest entry into the Legend of Zelda franchise, releasing on the Nintendo WiiU and the mysterious new Nintendo NX. This Zelda title will return the series’ NES-based roots, letting players explore a huge world all on their own, without guidance from the story or the game itself. Players will survive off the land, gathering fruit, food, supplies, and weapons in order to fend for themselves against the dangerous wildlife and giant robots that inhabit the vast open overworld. Nintendo has stressed that the game is very hands-off, allowing players to go wherever they want from the very start of the game. While the game itself won’t release until 2017, Nintendo has provided a very in-depth look into the game’s mechanics, as well as a cool new trailer, seen below. Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker, which released back in September 2015, lets fans create their own Mario stages, and allows players to play as their favorite Nintendo characters along with a number of other collaborative releases. Now, with the latest update released by Nintendo, Sanrio characters have finally entered the fray; Hello Kitty and My Melody are now playable characters! Sanrio is no stranger to Nintendo or video games in general, with a number of Hello Kitty-themed video games being released over the past couple of decades. This exciting announcement, however, marks the first time that Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters are playable within a video game released by Nintendo themselves!
