Stay at a Mario-themed room in Portugal

Tourists in Lisbon, Portugal are now being offered the chance to stay at a fanciful Mario-themed hotel room, thanks to the efforts of one dedicated fan! The room was put together by programmer and homeowner André Farinha, who wanted to share his love for Nintendo and its classic icon with tourists and locals alike. The room is decked to the brim with a variety of Nintendo merchandise and memorabilia, including built-in gaming stations for Nintendo’s 3DS and WiiU consoles! Also included in the room are a variety of the collectible Amiibo mini-figures, murals, posters, wallpapers, and even a decorated bathroom! Though the room cost Farinha over $11,000 to furnish and customize, this fun getaway can be rented on Airbnb for the low cost of just under $40 a night!

As a continuation of last year’s Super Mario-themed Hot Wheels line, which featured box art from a number of Mario games on the tiny collectible vehicles, Mattel has announced a new wave of Super Mario Hot Wheels! This new line of vehicles will be themed around the characters of the Mario universe themselves, and will feature vehicular representations of Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser. These unique vehicles will be released in limited amounts later this summer, so Nintendo fans should make sure to keep an eye out for these cool little Nintendo cars!

Hello Kitty debuts in Super Mario Maker

Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker, which released back in September 2015, lets fans create their own Mario stages, and allows players to play as their favorite Nintendo characters along with a number of other collaborative releases. Now, with the latest update released by Nintendo, Sanrio characters have finally entered the fray; Hello Kitty and My Melody are now playable characters! Sanrio is no stranger to Nintendo or video games in general, with a number of Hello Kitty-themed video games being released over the past couple of decades. This exciting announcement, however, marks the first time that Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters are playable within a video game released by Nintendo themselves! These new adorable characters are available now worldwide, so players can unlock them for themselves to try out. Check out the video below to see these two cuddly characters in action!

Mario teams up with Minecraft for WiiU

The popular Minecraft franchise is finally coming to Nintendo in a big way this May with the release of a brand-new exclusive Mario crossover! This new content, titled the “Super Mario Mash-Up Pack”, which will only be available on the Nintendo WiiU version of Minecraft, and will include a variety of unique blocks that will replicate the look and feel of Super Mario in the Minecraft world. On top of that, the pack will include a large assortment of character skins, allowing players to change their appearance into popular characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, and many more! The pack will be made available for owners of the digital version of Minecraft on the WiiU for free on May 17, and will come bundled with the game’s physical release on June 17. Shoe company Vans is getting retro this summer with their new line of Nintendo footwear! The upcoming line, which will include a number of Vans’ popular releases like the Old Skool, Classic Slip-On, and Sk8-Hi sneakers, will feature a number of unique Nintendo-themed styles and decorations. Classic Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Duck Hunt will be decorating these cool new shoes, along with styles based on the classic Nintendo Entertainment System and its controllers. This brand-new line of retro gaming footwear is currently scheduled to release this June, with more designs surely on the way!

Mario cafes open in Japan this summer

Video game company Nintendo’s mascot Mario, one of the most popular characters in the world, will soon be celebrating his 30th anniversary, and Nintendo is planning on celebrating it in a big way with the launch of several limited-time cafes across Japan later this month! In a collaboration with Tower Records, Nintendo will open these cafes, titled “Super Mario Bros x Tower Records Cafe”, in Shibuya, Omotesandou, and Ebisu. Each of these cafes will serve customers a selection of limited-edition Mario-themed foods and refreshments, along with one of 8 complimentary collectables with each purchase.

On top of a shared menu, each location will have its own unique themed dish, urging fans to visit all three locations for the full experience. the Shibuya location will offer a Blooper Squid Ink Pasta, while the Ebisu location will serve a spicy Koopa Taco Rice. Finally, the Omotesandou cafe will host a Super Star-shaped omelet rice dish! Each cafe will only be open for a limited time, with the Shibuya cafe opening from June 23rd to July 1st, and the Omotesandou and Ebisu locations opening from June 22nd to July 5th.

Nintendo announces partnership with Universal parks

In a first for the classic video game company, Nintendo has announced that a partnership has been arranged with Universal Parks & Resort to bring Nintendo characters to Universal’s theme parks around the world! Working together with the international resort division of Universal, Nintendo plans to create a large assortment of themed rides, attractions, and other events featuring iconic Nintendo characters like Mario, Link, Kirby, and more to the parks. These attractions, which will come to Universal’s parks in Hollywood, Florida, Japan, and Singapore, along with Universal’s future locations in Russia and China, are currently in the planning stages, and both companies have decided to create dedicated divisions to the partnership. This announcement comes as the latest move by NIntendo to market its characters as more than just video game icons, which includes a variety of toy releases and their recent hot-selling Amiibo collectors’ figures. More details are sure to be revealed as the partnership moves forward, so fans can be sure to see some of their favorite video game characters at Universal soon!

Toy manufacturing and distributing company Jakks Pacific has been pleasing video game fans of all ages with its World of Nintendo line of figures since early 2014. Featuring classic Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, and more, Jakks will now delve into retro gaming territory with the newly announced line of World of Nintendo plushes! These plushes will feature iconic Nintendo characters in classic 8-bit pixel style, and will debut with plush representations of Mario, Luigi, and Link in sprite form. Popular smartphone game franchise Puzzle & Dragons has announced a brand new game for the Nintendo 3DS series, which will feature Mario and friends! The game, titled “Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition”, will feature classic Mario characters and enemies, and will gear the iconic puzzle gameplay to fit into the Mario universe, including adding an overworld map and new mechanics. Puzzle & Dragons is a puzzle-based collection RPG game, in which players line up rows of blocks to do battle with and collect monsters. While the Puzzle & Dragons series is known for partnering up with a variety of companies to create exclusive character-based collectibles from franchises like Dragon Ball, Hello Kitty, Evangelion, Hunter x Hunter, Fist of the North Star, and more, this will be the first unique Puzzle & Dragons game based entirely on a collaborative effort. The game is scheduled to release in Japan on April 29th, with no current news on an overseas release.

Bandai reveals at SDCC

Bandai, and its Tamashii Nations brand of collectors’ merchandise, has always been at the forefront of Japanese imports and collectibles, featuring designs from some of the most popular anime, video games, tokusatsu, and more. Their showing at this year’s SDCC did not disappoint, with a variety of new reveals along with displays of popular merchandise from the past year.

Among the new reveals were Bandai’s newest Dragonball releases, exclusive to SDCC. These included the S.H. Figuarts Vegeta figure in its original animation colors, as well as the collectible Dragon Ball & Dragon Radar pack. These two exclusives were featured alongside a number of other previous Dragonball releases, including Figuarts articulated figures and Figuarts ZERO statues. Also featured was the new upcoming series of chibi-style Dragonball statue collectibles, which have no planned release date as of yet.

Also unveiled for the first time at SDCC was the first state-side look at the new Naruto S.H. Figuarts collectibles! The two new figures in this series, Naruto and Sasuke, featured their most recent designs from the manga, and each included alternate faces, swappable hands, attack effects and more.

On top of that, Nintendo fans across the world got their very first look at the brand-new S.H. Figuarts Luigi from the Mario franchise! Posed alongside his brother Mario, who recently got his own S.H. Figuarts release, their display included brand-new playset options for the set, including a themed backdrop and an extending Piranha Plant enemy!

Godzilla, who has had a busy year with the recent Legendary film and sequel announcement, was also at the Bandai show floor, appearing in his newest 2014 look in the S.H. MonsterArts line. Releasing later this year, the figure was also accompanied by a number of other Godzilla figures, including toys of older Godzilla designs and MechaGodzilla.

Finally, to celebrate Doraemon’s upcoming United States debut this August, Bandai unveiled two brand-new toys of the show’s protagonists: S.H. Figuarts Nobita and Robot Spirits Doraemon! Both of these figured appeared for the first time at the show, with Nobita having swappable hands and faceplates, and Doraemon even coming with his Dokodemo Door tool.

Other popular display pieces at the show were the complete set of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and Sailor Moon Figuarts! Both displays featured the entire cast of characters from each series, with unique display options such as the rotating disco ball on Sailor Moon’s display and the earth-like texture on the Power Rangers display. The Power Rangers play even featured the previously released Super Robot Chogokin figure of the Dino Megazord!

A number of Bandai’s other popular figures were on display as well, featuring figures from franchises like One Piece and Saint Seiya, and more. There were even display cases dedicated to popular Gundam franchises like Gundam Wing and the recent Gundam Build Fighters!
