Full Fashion Panic at Mechademia 2016
2016 at 07:24 pm by admin | Comments Off
The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, or MCAD for short, just tied up its annual Mechademia conference this past weekend, running from September 23rd to September 25th at the MCAD campus grounds. Since its inception in 2001, the annual Mecahdemia event features talks, workshops, and invites artists and guests from across the world to talk to young artists and show off some of their work.
At this event, students and visitors could take part in the 13th annual Full Fashion Panic runway fashion show put on by MCAD at Mechademia. A staple at the yearly Mechademia event, Full Fashion Panic offers the chance to see up-and-comping fashion from designers from all over the nation. This year’s show, which was organized by SGMS/Mechamedia and produced by Samantha Rei, featured five different designers: Lucie Biros, Maria Dang, Kathleen Moua, Salem’s Scissors, and Apatico. Through the different lines, the designers were able to take the viewer to many distinct places. These very talented designers were able to create five distinctly unique collections that capture this year’s theme of “World-Building”. All of the designer’s hard work and thoughtfulness to the theme was made apparent throughout the show. The show was full of gorgeous colors, various textures, and many beautifully handmade headpieces and accessories.
After the runway show viewers were able to interact with the designers and host Samantha Rei with a question-and-answer session. Here, viewers were able to hear more about what inspired the different collections from the designers themselves, along with learning what upcoming and future projects the designers will be working on. The show was a fantastic way to view and support new and upcoming talent in Minnesota’s blossoming fashion scene!

Bookstore awes customers with modern architecture
2016 at 06:04 pm by admin | Comments Off
Earlier this month, design studio XL-Muse was commissioned to redesign the Zhongshuge book store in Zhen Yuan, China, and the result is a modern-themed experience in architecture! The design, which takes advantage of mirrors and exotic shapes to create unique environments like caverns and tunnels, was inspired by the scenery of Zhen Yuan, which features a number beautiful riverside locations and arched bridges. The mirrored floors are meant to recreate the effect of water, and the ceiling is painted to recreate the starry night sky, allowing visitors to be transported into a surreal environment. The bookstore itself features a large reading area, lobby, and kid’s space featuring playgrounds and attractions. The Zhongshuge store is the latest in XL-Muse’s innovative design, with architectural work previously being hosted in Hangzhou last year.

British designer’s futuristic yacht concept

British designer Jonathan Schwinge has released a concept for a futuristic water vessel that lifts itself above the water’s surface for Schwinge Yachts. This super yacht, designed to travel at high speeds across the ocean surface, is designed around currently existing technologies, and is designed to take a look into the future of luxury cruise lines. The craft would be powered by hydrofoil propulsion, and would float on the surface at low speeds using standard hulls on the underside. Then, when the time comes to kick the boat into high gear, hydrofoils on the bottom arm of the ship would activate, lifting the ship above water level to provide a smooth, bump-free ride while at high speeds.
The ship’s tetrahedron design isn’t just for show, either; each of the three sides of the yacht can fold down, creating deck areas for passengers to lounge as well as providing multiple angles for the ship to dock at. The design is currently suited to carrying 10 passengers on its carbon-fiber structure, and while no plans are currently underway to make this dream boat a reality, it’s certainly an interesting look at what’s to come!

MIT creates “soft” 3D-printed robot arm
2015 at 01:27 pm by admin | Comments Off
Researchers and engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT for short, are often striving to enhance technology and robotics for future use in everyday life, and their latest creation brings the future of robotics closer than ever. The new robot arm, designed by MIT’s internal research team, is made of 3D-printed silicone rubber that is soft to the touch. The arm is also equipped with a number of state-of-the art “bend sensors”, which allow the robotic arm to analyze the durability of the item in question and alter its grip strength in response. In other words, MIT’s newest robot arm has the finger strength to lift hefty objects, and at the same time is able to provide a delicate grip to firmly lift fragile objects like eggs and discs without dropping or crushing them. This advancement opens a huge number of possibilities for the arm’s application in the future, from helping out the disabled to working in dangerous situations without harm. Check out the robot’s power in the video below!
