Sanrio’s Pompompurin set to decorate McDonald’s food

After winning this year’s Sanrio Character Ranking, adorable dog character Pompompurin is now set to appear on an undisclosed McDonald’s menu item this October! This fun activity comes as a collaboration between McDonald’s and Sanrio, and a teaser site is currently letting fans guess as to which of the 5 potential Pompompurin-themed items will appear on the menu on October 14th. The choices range from sensible to outlandish, and include items like a standard McDonald’s hamburger with Pompompurin’s visage emblazoned upon the bun and a custard McFlurry, to wacky items like crème caramel-flavored chicken nuggets and even a specialty burger featuring a caramel flan patty inside! Which item will make it to Japanese McDonalds later this month? You can check the official website, seen here, to see and vote on your choices, with the results being published on October 7th!

The brand new upcoming Studio Ghibli exhibit, titled “The Great Ghibli Exhibition~From Nausicaä to Red Turtle~”, has announced a brand-new exclusive menu to go alongside the exhibit! The exhibit will open on July 7th in Tokyo, and will begin serving these unique foods at the Museum Café THE SUN in the exhibition. The menu offers a wide variety of options, each of them themed after Studio Ghibli characters from the company’s years of animated films. Some of the food options include a Soot Sprite black hamburger, Totoro matcha shaved ice dessert, a Nausicaä-themed parfait, and even the sunny-side-up egg on toast from Castle in the Sky! The exhibit will also feature a wide variety of Ghibli memorabilia and souvenirs on top of these delicious treats, making this exhibit a must-see for any Ghibli fan!

Sanrio-themed dishes at Los Angeles restaurant

Sanrio fans in Los Angeles now have a fun restaurant stop to look forward to, as the Plan Check Kitchen and Bar has collaborated with Sanrio in order to bring popular characters Pompompurin and Chococat to their menu! Following their past collaboration with Sanrio’s Gudetama character, the restaurant held a launch party for these delicious new treats on June 10th, and features all their new designs in one large multi-course Sanrio meal. Starting off with a small dish of mac and cheese as an appetizer, the main dish arrives in the form of a Pompompurin-themed hamburger and vanilla cream soda combo, sporting the dog’s adorable visage on both. Once that’s done, dessert is served with the large Chococat cookie and ice cream!

On top of this wide offering of Sanrio treats, customers who order the meal will receive a complementary hat featuring Pompompurin and Chococat, with a design exclusively available at the Plan Check Kitchen and Bar! The restaurant has even gone so far as to decorate their windows with adorable Sanrio decals to celebrate! The promotion will only be available for one month, and a portion of all proceeds will be donated to L.A. Love & Leashes, a non-profit animal adoption movement. Mario cafes open in Japan this summer

Video game company Nintendo’s mascot Mario, one of the most popular characters in the world, will soon be celebrating his 30th anniversary, and Nintendo is planning on celebrating it in a big way with the launch of several limited-time cafes across Japan later this month! In a collaboration with Tower Records, Nintendo will open these cafes, titled “Super Mario Bros x Tower Records Cafe”, in Shibuya, Omotesandou, and Ebisu. Each of these cafes will serve customers a selection of limited-edition Mario-themed foods and refreshments, along with one of 8 complimentary collectables with each purchase.

On top of a shared menu, each location will have its own unique themed dish, urging fans to visit all three locations for the full experience. the Shibuya location will offer a Blooper Squid Ink Pasta, while the Ebisu location will serve a spicy Koopa Taco Rice. Finally, the Omotesandou cafe will host a Super Star-shaped omelet rice dish! Each cafe will only be open for a limited time, with the Shibuya cafe opening from June 23rd to July 1st, and the Omotesandou and Ebisu locations opening from June 22nd to July 5th.

“Cubes” turns food into isometric art

Design studio Lernert & Sander have taken food to the next level with their photo project titled “Cubes”. The project was commissioned by Dutch newspaper “de Volkskrant” in 2014 for a food-themed documentary, and Lernert & Sander stepped up to plate with a giant print of 98 different food cubes. Each identical 1″ cube is cut from a different food product, and the materials range from vegetables, fruits, meat, and even mushrooms! All of the food was freshly cut before their photo session, keeping the products looking clean and tasty. The food was cut using a unique slicer over the course of the five-day photo shoot session, and come together into one isometric presentation. Lernert & Sander are currently selling prints of the finished piece through their website, so fans of the clean design aesthetic and delicious food can have one of their very own!
