Sailor Moon Crystal inspires new apparel series

With the new Sailor Moon Crystal animated series ending its first season of episodes recently, Japanese fashion design company Secret Honey has collaborated with the internationally popular anime and manga franchise to release a number of exclusive pieces of apparel featuring Sailor Moon-themed designs and characters! These new fashionable outfits include a skirt/sweater combo that mimics the look of the school outfits seen in the anime, and features the silhouette of mascot cat Luna as well as designs based off items like the Moon Stick and Crystal Star Compact. The skirt/sweater set can be bought together for $195, or bought as individual pieces.

Also available through this new fashion line are dresses based off of Princess Serenity’s gown! The dress comes in two styles, each featuring a printed silhouette of either Princess Serenity or Prince Endymion. The dresses retail for $145 each, or fans can opt for a shorter camisole version of the dress that features a print of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask for just over $100. Finally, a white blouse featuring the Moon Stick, Crystal Star Compact, and Sailor Guardian insignia printed onto it will be available for $115. All of these exclusive designer pieces will be made available on July 24th through Secret Honey’s official website, and will debut in Secret Honey stores across Japan on July 25th. Sailor Moon fans don’t want to miss out on the chance to own some of this signature apparel for themselves!

Tokyo museum reveals gold & Silver Gundams

Fine jewelery company Ginza Tanaka has collaborated with Bandai to create a line of exclusive limited edition Rx-78-2 Gundam figures made of gold and silver! These figures, which are only available at the newly opened “The Art of Gundam” exhibit in Tokyo, are crafted in solid 24-karat gold and 95% pure silver, and come in two different scales. The Robot Damashii-based Rx-78 stands at 5″ tall, and costs over $160,000 for the gold variant and $5,000 for the silver version.

The other size featured at the museum is based on the Gundam Converge line of super-deformed figures, and stands at 2″ in height. These smaller figures also offer a smaller price point: $30,000 for the gold figure and $2,000 for the silver. Also on display at the event are a number of platinum art cards, featuring art of the Gundam, the Zaku II, and infamous antagonist Char Aznable, priced at $120 each. The exhibit will remain open until Sepember 27th, so fans have plenty of time to save up some cash for these fancy Gundam collectibles!

Murakami’s “Jellyfish Eyes” debuts in the West

Originally releasing in Japan on April 26th, 2013, contemporary pop artist Takashi Murakami’s first film, “Jellyfish Eyes”, has made its debut in the United States! The film started airing at the IFC Center theater in New York City last week, and will be shown until July 23rd, thanks to the efforts of Janus Films and Criterion Collection. A film 12 years in the making, “Jellyfish Eyes” is a story Murakami created for children, and deals with issues like coming to terms with grief, putting aside differences to work together, and how companionship emerges from times of disaster. Working on the film both as a director and as a designer, Murakami‚Äôs hand can be seen in both the storytelling and the character designs of the whimsical species whom befriend the children in the movie, called F.R.I.E.N.D.S. From big-eyed marshmallow jellyfish to hulking hairy beasts, Murakami has cited a variety of influences in the designs of “Jellyfish Eyes”, from Power Rangers to Spielberg movies.Upon the completion of the initial screening, it was also announced that a sequel to “Jellyfish Eyes” is already in the works, though little else was announced about the sequel’s plot or release date. Disneyland Shanghai designs unveiled

In an exciting move for Disney fans all over the world, Disney has officially released our first look at the upcoming Disneyland Shanghai amusement parks! The news was unveiled at a press conference by Disney chief executive Bob Iger, who went on to describe what the park will offer to its visitors. Disney Shanghai will be split into six distinct areas based on Disney films, animations, and media. These include Mickey Avenue as the main entrance to the park, which will lead to the Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Adventure Isle, Trasure Cove, and Tomorrowland.

There will also be unique areas like the Star Wars Launch Bay and Marvel Universe parks, which will feature props, memorabilia, sets, and other events for visitors to enjoy. New events have already been announced for the park as well, including a Mandarin-language stage performance of the “Lion King” musical, as well as exclusive merchandise like Zodiac-themed Disney characters. The park, which is located in Chuansha, Shanghai, will open in Spring 2016, so make plans to check out the newest grandiose Disney resort next year!

JW Anderson redesigns the Coke bottle

International fashion designer and artist Jonathan Anderson will be lending a creative hand in redesigning the iconic Coke bottle this August! Anderson, who has led the JW Anderson collection of apparel since 2008, has worked together with the Coca-Cola Company to design a new look for the Diet Coke bottle. This fresh take on a classic cultural icon is based on Anderson’s on autumn/winter 2015 knitwear collection, and will launch alongside exclusive T-shirts and notebooks featuring similar designs from Anderson. This won’t be the first time Coke has worked with art in their product; the company has previously enlisted the help of artists and designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Patricia Field, and Marc Jaboks in designing limited edition bottles. These new JW Anderson Coke bottles will go on sale starting August 17.

Greetings from TOMODACHI! We would like to invite you to participate in our call for artists for the upcoming TOMODACHI X mt art exhibit, happening August 29th at our Mall of America location.

What is mt, you ask? mt is a brand of washi rice paper masking tape produced by Japanese company Kamoi Kakoshi. mt tape comes in a huge variety of colors, patterns, and styles, and is designed to be easily aligned and repositioned for use in crafts, interior decoration, art installation and design. Consumers and artists worldwide use the tape for a wide variety of purposes, ranging from arts and crafts projects to large-scale international art exhibitions.

TOMODACHI has hosted a variety of art events and workshops over the years, and this time we’ve collaborated with mt to host an exhibit and mt launch party this coming August. This event will focus primarily on mt’s decorative tape and its use in creating art. mt has collaborated with many designers, companies and museum throughout the world, such as MoMA in New York City, the Maison & Objet in Paris, the Ambiente in Germany, Ikea Japan, Uniqlo Paris, Issey Miyake boutique and more.

WE WANT YOU!
This event will be held at our Mall of America store on August 29th, and will feature creations from a select number of talented artists and designers. The theme for the show is focused on the use of mt tape in art, so accepted artists will use mt tape (provided by TOMODACHI) to design something cool in the form of 2D pieces, 3D objects, fashion or even by covering a vehicle like a moped or bicycle — we want to hear your ideas!

20th Century Fox has uploaded the full trailer for their newest upcoming superhero film, “Fantastic Four”! Originally debuting as a comic book in 1961, the movie will retell the origins of the team, following scientist Reed Richards and his team as they are given extraordinary powers as they try to harness their abilities and save the planet from their nemesis, Doom. With the movie soon to be released on August 7th, this trailer is our best look at the new film before the official opening next month!

Toymaker produces 3D-printed fantasy tank

Toymaker Michael Sng has taken the use of 3D-printing in toy creation to a whole new level with his brand-new HMC Boudicca fantasy tank! The vehicle is part of Sng’s Codename Colossus project, which is a series of made-to-order kinetic toys set in an alternate reality Europe. The toy itself stands at over 20″ high, and is comprised of over 400 3D-printed parts, all painted by hand. Featuring multiple motors and LEDs, the toy is capable of walking on its six legs, opening hatches to reveal hidden cannons, rotating its variety of turrets and spotlights, and more! This impressive figure is currently available to order directly from Sng’s Singapore-based workshop for $5,000, and Sng plans to release smaller, more afforable versions of the Boudicca and future releases if the line catches on. EVA Air has been operating a number of Hello Kitty-themed Boeing 777-300ER passenger jet planes around the world recently, with flights headed to Taipet, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other worldwide locations. Most recently, the airline began permanent service from Taipei to Houston, Texas recently, and the occasion was celebrated by a huge Hello Kitty EVA Air event in Houston on June 19th!

The event, which was hosted alongside the inaugural flight to Houston, featured a number of fun events to mark the occasion, including dance shows on the runway as well as on-stage, along with a variety of free merchandise, exclusive photo ops, and more. The event had a space motif to the decorations and event, and Hello Kitty herself even showed up to the occasion in full space-kitty astronaut gear! The flights itself boast the standard exclusive experience fans have come to expect from EVA Air, and include a variety of Hello Kitty-themed refreshments, accessories, and merchandise. The EVA Air Boeing is now on constant circulation between Taipei and Houston following the event, so don’t miss out on your chance to travel with style thanks to Hello Kitty and friends!

Available at both our Mall of America and Rosedale locations every Saturday, creative minds will be given a free milk carton cutout as well as same of a variety of MT Tape colors to play with and enjoy. Our first workshop this past weekend was a huge success, with visitors creating tons of fun and cool designs with MT Tape!
