This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was bigger than ever, with dozens of new announcements on the latest movies, comics, toys, games, and more for fans all over the world! With a wide variety of companies and franchises showing off their new and upcoming products, there has been plenty of awesome news and information for visitors to chew on for months to come.

One of the biggest attractions at the event was the Star Wars panel, which was held in anticipation of the new “The Force Awakens” film’s release this coming December. The panel featured an interview from the famous trio of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, whom will reprise their roles as Luke, Leia, and Han in the new film, as well as the slew of new actors and characters. The panel also featured a surprise showing of a Star Wars-themed concert, complete with fireworks display, as well as new information and tidbits about the upcoming film. “The Force Awakens” will be the newest Star Wars film in 10 years, and will release in theaters on December 18th, 2015.



DC and Marvel were also present at the event, showing off new information and trailers for their upcoming superhero movies. Among these reveals was the first full-length trailer for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, debuting a number of action scenes between the two titanic superheroes, as well as the first debut of Wonder Woman! Other releases include information on the upcoming Deadpool film, as well as “X-Men: Apocalypse” and other big-name films.

A number of displays and exclusive figures were also available throughout SDCC, and covered wide range of franchises, including Mario Bros, Star Wars, Power Rangers, Dragon Ball Z, Game of Thrones, Dr. Who, Frozen, various Marvel and DC franchises, and much more. Virtual reality was also a large component of a number of SDCC booths thanks to the Oculus Rift, and companies like Mattel, Legendary Pictures, SyFy, and others took advantage of the newest technology to advertise their upcoming releases and products.

With so many cool news announcements and releases, this year’s SDCC was just as amazing as fans have come to expect from the annual convention, and has left us all waiting in anticipation for next year!

Sanrio’s new DC Comics fashion line

In their newest collaborative effort, Sanrio and Warner Bros. have released their newest line of Hello Kitty x DC Comics apparel! The line, which originally debuted globally this February with Batman and Superman-themed merchandise, released a new series of three DC comics watches. These watches join the previous ones with brand-new designs, this time featuring Hello Kitty dressed as super-heroines like Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. On top of that, a new line of women’s nightwear was also released, featuring these new designs as well as the original Batman and Superman decorations. This collaboration between Sanrio and Warner Bros. shows no signs of slowing down either, as more DC-inspired watches are scheduled to release later this year.

Figure and collectible company Hot Toys has announced the newest entry in its growing line of Batman 1/6th scale figures: the Batman design from 1992’s “Batman Returns” film! With Michael Keaton representing the Caped Crusader in Tim Burton’s classic Batman film, the figure strives to preserve his unique Batman characterization through impressive life-like sculpting and articulation. True to life, the figure cannot move its head, emulating the real costume’s hard cowl preventing movement, but instead offers a number of faceplates to recreate different emotions, and even comes with posable eyes! The figure itself will come with a variety of accessories, including swappable hands, Batarangs, grappling hook, swappable hands, and a unique stand.

Along with the new Batman figure, Hot Toys is releasing a two-pack, featuring Batman as well as Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne in dinner attire! This figure features a unique sculpt of the Batman’s unmasked head, which can be used with the Batman figure to emulate his iconic unmasking from the film. While no price or release date has been set for either the standalone Batman figure or the two-pack, Hot Toys has announced that the figures will release later this year.

Comic-Con has always been a place where companies and manufacturers can talk about their latest upcoming figures and merchandise. Square-Enix, video game developer and toy manufacturer, has continued this trend at last week’s New York Comic-Con with the unveiling of several different upcoming figures in their popular Play-Arts Kai line! the figures shown at NYCC covered a wide variety of mediums and franchises, ranging from comic book classics like Batman, Iron-Man, and Spider-Man to franchises like Final Fantasy, Appleseed, Predator, Vocaloid, and more!

Some highlights from their Play-Arts Kai booth include figures of Batman, Catwoman, and Hatsune Miku redesigned by Square-Enix artist Tetsuya Nomura, who is known for his artwork and character designs for the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises, as well as new figures for the popular “Final Fantasy VII” line of figures, including Tifa, Barret, and Red XIII in their appearances from Advent Children. With no release date yet scheduled for most of these figures, keep your eyes open for more Play-Arts Kai news!

NECA has been producing dolls and action figures of iconic character since 2002, and their showing at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con features a whole new slew of collectibles ranging from recent smash hits to retro-style icons!

First up is the Pacific Rim “End Titles” Jaegar 3-pack, featuring three of Pacific Rim’s fan-favorite Jaegar robots! Standing at 7″ tall each, the set comes with Gipsy Danger, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka, each of which has been repainted in black, high-gloss finishes to recreate their appearances during the end credits of the film. Each Jaegar even has glow-in-the-dark visors, and will come in a collectible window package with foil slipcover. Priced at $60, this collector’s set is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a must-have for any diehard Pacific Rim fan!

NECA has been known to make figures of characters that no one expected, and this year’s SDCC lineup does not disappoint with the new figure of Super Freddy! Featured in A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, this 8″ Super Freddy figure comes in a retro monochromatic color scheme and includes actual cloth for his attire. Super Freddy is limited to 5,000 pieces and retails for $40.

In order to commemorate the new Predator: Fire and Stone comic book series by Dark Horse comics, which begins in October 2014, NECA has also create a limited-edition Ahab Predator action figure! Featuring unique new sculpting and designs that will be featured in the upcoming comic book, Ahab Predator stands at 7″ tall and will retail for $25 in a limited edition release of 5,000 pieces.

Also coming to SDCC are exclusive colorways of the Marvel and DC Scalers! These miniature 2″ figures are designed to grip headphone cords, wires, cables, and more! These SDCC exclusive two-pack releases will be priced at $10, and feature previous Scaler releases in new colors: Silver Centurion Iron Man and Marvels Spider-Man, and Monochrome Batman and Joker!

Finally, NECA is continuing their retro-styled character releases, following last year’s exclusive NES Jason release, with a variety of new characters announced and on display at the event! The first releases represent character from the popular 1993 videogame “Robot vs Terminator” on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis systems! Two 7″ figure sets are planned for release: one featuring the T-800 Terminator and a Terminator Endoskeleton, and the second featuring Robocop in his normal look as well as an on-fire variant! All the figures in both sets will be designed and decorated to match their on-screen appearances from the videogame, and come with their own unique accessories and weapons.

NECA has also announced a brand-new 7″ Batman figure, designed and colored off of his appearance in the 1989 NES videogame! Featuring a cel-shaded design of purple and blue, Batman will feature a removable cape, along with his Batarang and Spear Gun accessories. Unfortunately, none of these retro-colored toys will be available for purchase until October, but fans at NECA’s SDCC booth will be able to get a good look at these cel-shaded classics in person for the first time.

Batman celebrates 75th Anniv. with new short film

Batman, originally debuting in May 1939, is widely recognized as one of America’s classic cultural icons, and has been adapted into a wide variety of movies and animated franchises. Batman will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2014, and the icon will receive a number of memorials for the milestone throughout the year. One such tribute has been released by producer Bruce Timm, known for his work on the 1992 Emmy-award-winning cartoon, Batman: The Animated Series. This short animation, titled “Batman: Strange Days”, showcases “a lost tale from Batman’s past”, according to DC Entertainment, and features the classic style associated with the popular 90s cartoon. Created as a love letter to both the series itself as well as fans who grew up with the cartoon, this short is one that Batman fans will surely want to check out!
