Adidas unveils 3D printed running shoes

Adidas, ready to embrace the use of 3D printing in future apparel customization, has announced their new “Futurecraft 3D” set of footwear! Hailed as a production breakthrough, Adidas’ new shoe will be completely customized by the user to fit their specific foot shape, and will even take contours and pressure points into account in order to create the most comfortable fit for every user. Buyers will be able to enter an Adidas store and have a unique pair of shoes printed exactly for them once the project takes off. This proof-of-concept is a collaboration in 3D printing service Materialise, and looks to be the first step in a series of projects from the company to innovate the budding medium.

Live art experience at Envision Fall 2015

TOMODACHI is excited to partner with the Envision Fall 2015 fashion show and our friends at Public Functionary and Fulton Beer to help create the event’s VIP experience on Saturday, September 26th at Orchestra Hall. We collaborated on a vibrant backdrop for the VIP room’s photo booth, which is designed completely with Japanese washi brand, mt tape!

More than just a pretty background, the photo booth is a unique live art collaboration. Guests are invited to pose for fashion photographer Alex Butterfield in front the washi installation; Alex then hands images off to award-winning illustrator, Allegra Lockstad, who will further embellish them using a digital Wacom tablet, projected LIVE. The photos will be posted on Facebook after the event — watch for them to be shared by TOMODACHI!

The Envision Fall fashion show is the Twin Cities preeminent fashion showcase, and the longest running fashion event in Minnesota. Held in the stunning venue of Orchestra Hall, Envision features a runway show of looks from both emerging and established local designers and boutiques.

The VIP Room, curated by Public Functionary, and sponsored by Fulton and TOMODACHI, will also feature music from Eric Mayson and special guests as well as a bar, food and a pop-up shop from Hotrocity and a mt tape table hosted by TOMODACHI!

Mechademia conference returns to MCAD this fall

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, or MCAD for short, will once again be bringing anime and Asian culture to the Twin Cities with their annual Mechademia conference! Originally titled “School Girls and Mobile Suits”, the Mechademia conference was originally founded in 2001 as a means for discussion of Asian culture and its influence in design, fashion, and art from all over the world. The three-day event has often hosted a number of talks and events hosted by internationally renowned artists in the past, including “Cowboy Bebop” and “Ghost in the Shell” screenwriter Dai Sato and art critic Hiroki Azuma, and will be hosting art and talks this year from manga artist Tomoko Taniguchi, fashion artist Novala Takemoto, videogame designer Brianna Wu, and more!

On top of that, the event hosts a wide variety of workshops and hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages, and even a runway fashion show! The event even publishes an annual “Mechademia” art book, which has received international praise. Sailor Moon Crystal inspires new apparel series

With the new Sailor Moon Crystal animated series ending its first season of episodes recently, Japanese fashion design company Secret Honey has collaborated with the internationally popular anime and manga franchise to release a number of exclusive pieces of apparel featuring Sailor Moon-themed designs and characters! These new fashionable outfits include a skirt/sweater combo that mimics the look of the school outfits seen in the anime, and features the silhouette of mascot cat Luna as well as designs based off items like the Moon Stick and Crystal Star Compact. The skirt/sweater set can be bought together for $195, or bought as individual pieces.

Also available through this new fashion line are dresses based off of Princess Serenity’s gown! The dress comes in two styles, each featuring a printed silhouette of either Princess Serenity or Prince Endymion. The dresses retail for $145 each, or fans can opt for a shorter camisole version of the dress that features a print of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask for just over $100. Finally, a white blouse featuring the Moon Stick, Crystal Star Compact, and Sailor Guardian insignia printed onto it will be available for $115. All of these exclusive designer pieces will be made available on July 24th through Secret Honey’s official website, and will debut in Secret Honey stores across Japan on July 25th. JW Anderson redesigns the Coke bottle

International fashion designer and artist Jonathan Anderson will be lending a creative hand in redesigning the iconic Coke bottle this August! Anderson, who has led the JW Anderson collection of apparel since 2008, has worked together with the Coca-Cola Company to design a new look for the Diet Coke bottle. This fresh take on a classic cultural icon is based on Anderson’s on autumn/winter 2015 knitwear collection, and will launch alongside exclusive T-shirts and notebooks featuring similar designs from Anderson. This won’t be the first time Coke has worked with art in their product; the company has previously enlisted the help of artists and designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Patricia Field, and Marc Jaboks in designing limited edition bottles. These new JW Anderson Coke bottles will go on sale starting August 17.

Popular Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami will be bringing his art to footwear this summer with his newest collaboration with shoe company Vans! The new collection of Murakami-themed shoes will be a part of the Vault by Vans fall 2015 collection, and will feature unique Murakami’s signature flowers and skulls design motifs on the Vans’ Classic Slip-On shoes.

The Pokémon Company, known for the Pokémon video game franchise as well as well as related merchandise, apparel, animations, and more, has opened up an exclusive fashion boutique in Los Angeles, California in a limited-time seasonal boutique! The new pop-up shop opened in the Japan LA Pop Culture Shop on June 6th, whose opening party featured unique events like character photo ops, live music from celebrity DJ Amy Pham, and hidden exclusive nail artists!

The boutique itself will be carrying a number of exclusive releases for the boutique, including collaborative releases with Japan LA Pop Culture, Omocat, and Onch Movement. In their newest collaborative effort, Sanrio and Warner Bros. have released their newest line of Hello Kitty x DC Comics apparel! The line, which originally debuted globally this February with Batman and Superman-themed merchandise, released a new series of three DC comics watches. These watches join the previous ones with brand-new designs, this time featuring Hello Kitty dressed as super-heroines like Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. On top of that, a new line of women’s nightwear was also released, featuring these new designs as well as the original Batman and Superman decorations. This collaboration between Sanrio and Warner Bros. shows no signs of slowing down either, as more DC-inspired watches are scheduled to release later this year.

Gary Baseman is coming to women’s apparel this spring! Announced at last fall’s New York Fashion Week, the new line of Coach apparel and accessories will feature a variety of Gary Baseman’s designs and characters, bringing his iconic art style to life in wardrobes across the world. Baseman has collaborated closely with Coach on the creation of these new series of designs, entitled “Spring Girl”, going so far as to set up a studio office directly at Coach headquarters for the release. The “Spring Girl” series tells the tale of a girl and her imaginary creatures, and will be featured on shirts, purses, key chains, phone cases, and more. These fashionable Baseman-themed accessories will be available this spring.
