LEGO donates Rio replica for Olympics

Just in time for the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, LEGO has donated a massive recreation of the city in its iconic building blocks to the city! The model consists of over 930,000 brick, and required 50 professional LEGO construction artists to work over a year to complete it in time. The model includes a wide variety of iconic landmarks from the city, cramming it all into a 16ft x 20ft display. On top of that, LEGO also created unique miniature figures of Vinicius and Tom, the 2016 Olympic’s mascots! Disney and LEGO have come together in a magical way to release a giant recreation of Disney World’s iconic Cinderella Castle in LEGO! The castle will prominently feature the front display of the castle in intricate detail, while turning the set around will reveal a number of playrooms for LEGO mini-figures to have fun in! These rooms will themselves be themed after a number of Disney’s most famous movies and animations, including Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Fantastia, and Brave among others. The giant set will also contain unique Disney-themed mini-figures, providing collectors with the chance to own Mickey Mouse, Minny Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Tinker Bell! Standing at nearly 30″ high, the 4080-piece LEGO Disney Castle will go on sale on September 1st for $349.

Legoaizer transforms photos into LEGO

Tech company AJU Productions has developed a new tool that can turn any photo you desire into a LEGO construction! Titled “Legoaizer”, the app is capable of analyzing uploaded photos, and creating a LEGO blueprint for users to turn into a real-life build, if they so wish. The program also supports functionality with the LEGO website Bricklink, showing user which exact colors of LEGO brick are needed or should be purchased in order to complete their photo. Legoaizer can also be tailored to suit the user’s needs, ranging from low-cost mode to photo-accurate colors, and more! The program also supports functionality with other construction kits like DUPLO, Ministick, and even standard color beads. LEGO goes vintage with Volkswagen Beetle kit

LEGO is continuing its series of accurate model cards, alongside its recently released kit of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, with the announcement of a new vintage 1960 Volkswagen Beetle set! The set, which will represent the vintage vehicle in a stylish sky blue, is meant to recreate the classic vehicle down to the tiniest detail, and will include opening hood and trunk, removable roof, flip down seats, and a number of accessories for a summer beach party like surfboard, cooler, and drinks. The completed set will measure just under a foot long, and will be made available to purchase starting July 17. Check out the video to see specific details on the set!

LEGO is getting ready to celebrate the introduction of a new member of the LEGO brick-building toy family with the announcement of a new LEGO baby! The new figure, which will be the first unique LEGO baby figure ever released, is a part of the new LEGO City – Fun in the Park set that released on June 1st. In order to celebrate the occasion, LEGO released the announcement with a parody picture of an ultrasound, showing off the little LEGO dude in all its tiny glory! The new set is now available in a wide variety of toy stores for $39.99, so go and check out this new member of LEGO history for yourself!

World’s largest LEGO Millennium Falcon

For fans of the Star Wars franchise worldwide, May the 4th is a special day to express their love of the classic sci-fi space opera series. At LEGOLand Malaysia, though, LEGO Master Builders Dan and Chris Steininger have pushed their adoration to the extreme by creating the world’s largest LEGO recreation of the iconic Millennium Falcon! Built as a joint exercise between the father-and-son tag team over the course of 30 hours, the build includes more than 200,000 LEGO bricks, each brick being 4 times their usual handheld size! These 4x sized bricks were created with normal LEGO bricks, and were hand-assembled by the Steiningers as well as visiting fans wanting to contribute to this momentous occasion. The final model measures in at more than 16 feet long, and weighs just over 1,100 pounds! This spectacular feat isn’t the end, though; visitors to the LEGOLand Malaysia site later this month will be able to see two replica TIE Fighters made out of LEGO, which will begin construction this weekend. Ever since the unveiling of LEGO Technic’s latest kit of the Porsche 911 this past January, fans worldwide have been clamoring for any info on the kit, excited to put together their own miniature version of the classic high-performance sports car. Wait no longer; LEGO has finally announced that the LEGO Technic Porsche 911 kit is releasing on June 1st! In order to celebrate the occasion, LEGO has uploaded a video to YouTube detailing the many pieces and features of the hyped kit. The kit, which will include official Porsche stickers and a thick booklet detailing the history of the Porsche 911, will feature working doors, accessible rear lid to the car’s engine, complete with working pistons, and even a working glove compartment! LEGO artist recreates massive Hobbit landscape

With LEGO releasing dozens of kits from the famed Lord of the Rings and Hobbit franchise, fans around the world have been able to recreate their favorite scenes from the classic fantasy novel series with the building blocks. However, LEGO artist and builder Michal Kazmierczak has taken his love for both the building toy and the LotR franchise, and used it to create a massive replica of the Lonely Mountain, Erebor! Featured in the Hobbit book and movie series as the home of the dwarves and the lair of Smaug the dragon, Kazmierczak’s version of it stands at a mighty 7′ tall, extends over 5′ deep, and includes over 120,000 individual LEGO bricks!

If the towering wall structures and imposing dwarven statues at the entrance weren’t enough, the set features a fully-detailed landscape in the front, as well as detailed interior, recreating the gold-littered hallways and chasms of the Lonely Mountain in LEGO bricks. A number of famous scenes are also featured, and includes unique cracks and lighting in the set itself to fully realize the look and feel of the location. While the set itself is completely unique and unavailable for purchase, just seeing the amazing attention to detail and scale of the piece is enough to make any fan excited to see what Kazmiercazk will do next with his LEGO hobby!

The University of Cambridge is looking for a LEGO professor! The British University, founded in 1209 and currently the fourth oldest university in the world, has founded a new LEGO research center thanks in part to the LEGO Foundation, and wishes to look into the role of play in learning, education, and development. The new branch is currently looking for an enthusiastic professor to lead the center and its potential projects, and hopes to work with the iconic building block toy and how it affects the development of learning skills and creativity in children. This will not be Cambridge’s first foray into LEGO, as it was worked with the LEGO Foundation over the past decade on early childhood learning, and has also collaborated with MIT and the Tsinghua University in China.
