Up Next@Public Functionary: SF Artist Aaron De La Cruz

We’re really excited to check out Public Functionary’s next exhibit Always Something featuring the graphic, graffiti-influenced artwork of San Francisco’s Aaron De La Cruz. In Always Something, De La Cruz continues his ongoing exploration of line and shape with a new body of work that includes original paintings, works on paper, a large-scale mural, 3D wood and mirror works and the debut of a new, limited edition line of wallpapers produced in conjunction with Public Functionary and artist-designed wallpaper line, Area Environments. The first release in the new PFxAE Exhibition Collection, the wallpaper will be installed as the backdrop to the exhibit, creating a layered, pattern-rich viewing experience.

ADLC studio visit-14

Named one of the “25 Most Important Artists” by Complex Magazine, De La Cruz relies on a simplistic yet striking visual vocabulary. He applies his free-hand style to a number different formats — primarily walls and environments — a technique he’s been perfecting for 10+ years. Each piece draws the viewer’s eye through an open-ended exploration of maze-like composition and naturally balanced strokes — beautiful both in detail and as the sum of many parts. For Always Something, the artist has developed a full-scale installation that contextualizes his work as multi-faceted, tactile design crossed with impactful contemporary art.

In addition, a limited-edition 24″x36″ Aaron De La Cruz print will be produced by Arkitip, available exclusively for Always Something through both Public Functionary and arkitip.com after Nov 7th.

TOMODACHI x Envision Fashion Show

2015 at 01:36 pm by admin | Comments Off

Envision2

We were happy to partner with Public Functionary, Ignite Models and V2 to co-sponsor Envision, the largest, longest running fashion show in Minnesota. Held at beautiful Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis, this glamorous event brought out the most stylish of people, from designers, artists, creatives to fashion fans and buyers. TOMODACHI partnered with our friends at Public Functionary on the VIP Room experience, which included collaborating on a vibrant mt tape photo booth installation. Photographer Alex Butterfield shot guests against the colorful washi backdrop while illustrator Allegra Lockstadt created digital illustrations over the images live on a projector for all to see.

Also in the VIP room, TOMODACHI hosted a table with an mt tape art activity and display, helmed by charming staffer Niki, who chatted with guests and sold plenty of mt tape to the fashionable masses.

On top of that, TOMODACHI donated 300 gift bags for the VIP runway guests, which we embellished at the last minute with fun washi tape designs with the help of our friends at PF.

Thanks to Public Functionary, Ignite Models and V2 for inviting us to participate! Special thanks also goes out to Kate Iverson for all of her enthusiasm for mt and washi tape!

Public Functionary x TOMODACHI “Wash-i Room” Collab

2015 at 01:27 pm by admin | Comments Off

Washi4

Contemporary art space Public Functionary partnered with TOMODACHI to create a vibrantly colorful installation in…where else? The gallery bathroom. Dubbed the “Wash-i Room” (get it, wash room/washi tape?), installation artist Meepo created a dimensional, abstract design using Japanese brand mt tape that covered each wall and included designed panels inserted into a grid of mirrors. Even the soap dispenser got the washi treatment! Stop by the gallery this fall to catch an art exhibit and snap a selfie in the wash-i room (you could even win a PF t-shirt!).

TOMODACHI x mt tape Art Exhibit: Retrospective

2015 at 01:21 pm by admin | Comments Off

banner and article

Through the month of September, we had an amazing time hosting 19 local artists working in the medium of Japanese washi brand, mt tape. Each piece was more unique than the last, with artists creating everything from entire dresses made out of washi tape to design-based works, portraits, multi-dimensional pieces, installation art and more. Artists like Jennifer Davis and Michael Cina stayed true to their aesthetics, using mt tape to accent and embellish their beautiful, recognizable compositions, while artists such as Joshua Nelson and Lex Thompson chose to go more large scale, bringing a Minnesota wildlife themes into the equation for a fun front window display. We’re sad to see the work go, but happy to have collaborated with such talented artists — and hopefully helped them discover a new art medium in mt tape!

Live art experience at Envision Fall 2015

2015 at 03:01 pm by admin | Comments Off

envision-poster

TOMODACHI is excited to partner with the Envision Fall 2015 fashion show and our friends at Public Functionary and Fulton Beer to help create the event’s VIP experience on Saturday, September 26th at Orchestra Hall. We collaborated on a vibrant backdrop for the VIP room’s photo booth, which is designed completely with Japanese washi brand, mt tape!

More than just a pretty background, the photo booth is a unique live art collaboration. Guests are invited to pose for fashion photographer Alex Butterfield in front the washi installation; Alex then hands images off to award-winning illustrator, Allegra Lockstad, who will further embellish them using a digital Wacom tablet, projected LIVE. The photos will be posted on Facebook after the event — watch for them to be shared by TOMODACHI!

The Envision Fall fashion show is the Twin Cities preeminent fashion showcase, and the longest running fashion event in Minnesota. Held in the stunning venue of Orchestra Hall, Envision features a runway show of looks from both emerging and established local designers and boutiques.

The VIP Room, curated by Public Functionary, and sponsored by Fulton and TOMODACHI, will also feature music from Eric Mayson and special guests as well as a bar, food and a pop-up shop from Hotrocity and a mt tape table hosted by TOMODACHI!
