Animated characters help teach piano
2016 at 04:22 pm by admin | Comments Off
Researchers at MIT’s Tangible Media Lab have developed an alternative to traditional piano teachers and tutorials with their newly developed interactive musical score, titled “Andante”. This program, which uses a reflective keyboard cover and an automated system for the keys, projects tiny animated characters onto the screen above the keys, who press the keys on the piano as they walk along. These characters are meant to help teach the basics of music composition by walking in certain steps to certain chords and rhythms. By following along and learning the notes through the animated characters’ movements, users are encouraged to test and expand their learning and understanding of music composition, and even add on themselves with a little improvisation! Check out the video below to see Andante in action!

YAMAHA’s musical chairs take the stage in October
2015 at 02:43 pm by admin | Comments Off
Known for their work with the vocaloid idol Hatsune Miku, automobile and tech company YAMAHA will once again bring their technical expertise to the field of music this wall with a unique new musical wheelchair! The chair, which is called &Y01 or Andy 01, designed this wheelchair with ease of use in mind, as well as combining it with percussion instruments. The design of the chair was based around the eighth note often seen on traditional music staffs, with the large sail on the back made to emulate the wavy line of the note. The chairs will debut in a concert titled “Slow Movement -The Eternal Symphony-”, which will debut at the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan on October 3rd. With the goal of making music accessible to all people regardless of condition, these unique wheelchairs will hopefully lead to new innovations in combining music into our daily lives in unexpected ways.

French company 3Dvarius has worked together with musician, artist, and violinist Laurent Bernadac in order to create a brand-new functional 3D-printed violin! This new piece, which is printed as a single large part, is designed to be affordable, lightweight, and easy to use, thanks to a in-depth research process into the 3D-printed material and how pressure from the strings and use affect the plastic product. The end result is a fully functional electric violin that sounds as beautiful as it looks! This new violin shows the wide variety of uses for 3D printing that have to be explored, and will hopefully lead to more new and exciting uses in the years to come!
