Artist creates 3D printed film

As a testament to the use of 3D printing in the creative process, artist and filmmaker Gilles-Alexandre Deschaud has uploaded a trailer for his fully 3D-printed film! The film, titled “Chase Me”, is a solo project by Deschaud, whom has spent the past two years putting together every aspect of the film. Every frame of animation is its own printed figure, and even the sets and backgrounds used in the film have been created through the printer. Deschaud has uploaded two videos of the movie, featuring a short trailer as well as a making-of video which shows the creative process behind the film. While the film is still under development, these videos give viewers a good look at what to expect, as well as what can be done with 3D printing in animation.


Upcoming Godzilla film teaser and details

After 2014’s popular American-made Godzilla film by Legendary Films, fans worldwide have been left looking for more Godzilla action in the future. Alongside Legendary’s planned sequel for their Godzilla film, Japanese film company and original Godzilla creators Toho has started to release info about their own entry into the Godzilla franchise! The film will the first Japanese-made Godzilla film since “Godzilla” Final Wars” in 2004, and the studio has announced that the film will be directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi! Both directors have been known for their previous works with giant monsters; Anno is mostly known for his work with the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise as well as his work with Ghibli film “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”, while Higuchi is known for directing the recent “Attack on Titan” anime adaptation. On top of this announcement, the first teaser poster was released, showing off Godzilla’s giant footprint. While no release date has yet been set for the film, things are looking up for one of Japan’s most iconic characters!


Attack on Titan live-action movie revealed

One of the most popular manga franchises in recent years is headed to the big screen this summer! “Attack on Titan”, which is a manga created by Hajime Isayama in 2009, exploded in popularity with its anime adaptation in 2013, and will now be adapted into a pair of live-action films. The story revolves around a world where humanity struggles against giant man-eating humanoid creatures called “Titans”, and follows the story of protagonists Eren, Mikasa, and Armin in their fight for survival. The two movies, which are scheduled to release on August 1st and September 19th respectively, will take the story in a new direction not seen in the original manga and anime, and will introduce new characters and plot elements which will make the movies a fresh experience for newcomers and veterans to the franchise alike. The first teaser, shown below, also gives us our first look at the CGI-rendered Titans onscreen, remaining faithful to their drawn forms.


Dragonball Z: Fukkatsu no F trailer

After the film’s first teaser in July 2014, we have finally been treated to the first full trailer for the newest Dragon Ball Z movie, titled “Fukkatsu no F”! In the new film, the legendary space tyrant Frieza will be revived after his defeat at the hands of Goku and Trunks in the original storyline. The movie will follow Frieza’s attempts at revenge, as well as debut a new golden form for the villain. Alongside the reveal of the new trailer, promotional material for the film was also released, including a manga adaptation of the beginning of the film, as well as exclusive merchandise and collectibles available only at the film’s theatrical debut. The new movie is set to release in Japan on April 18, with plans to release the film internationally in the works. Dragon Ball fans can get excited to see the revival of one of anime’s most iconic villains this spring!


Newest animated Doraemon movie promo

Popular Japanese character Doraemon had a very busy year in 2014, ranging from his first ever debut in the United States to the debut of Doraemon’s critically acclaimed CGI film, “Stand By Me Doraemon”. Now, a full-length promotion for Doraemon’s newest upcoming film has been released! The newest film, titled “Doraemon: Nobita no Space Heroes”, will be the 46th film in the illustrious franchise, and will once again feature Nobita, Doraemon, and the rest of the crew. In the new film, Doraemon will debut his new gadget, Director Burger, which gives the cast a variety of powers so that they can roleplay as Space Heroes. The film is set to debut in Japan on March 7th, and will feature a variety of promotional material alongside its release.


Evangelion short streamed online

Animator Expo, a weekly collaboration between anime artists across the medium, recently uploaded a CGI animated short based on the popular Evangelion series. Titled “Evangelion – Another Impact”, the short was headed by Sola Digital Arts, the animation studio behind the recent “Captain Harlock” movie, and was directed by Shinji Aramaki, whose works include anime like Bubblegum Crisis, Megazone 23, and Halo Legends. The short, meant to be an aside to the Evangelion story, features a brand-new Eva Unit, as well as complex CGI environments and animation. Check out the short in the video below!


Fantastic Four reboot teaser

Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” comic book franchise has seen a number of adaptations since their comic book debut in 1961, including a number of animated cartoons, games, and two feature films. Today, fans were given their first look at the newest upcoming Fantastic Four movie, which is set to retell the origin story of the superhero team. The story, which is reported to be based on the 2004 “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comic book retelling, will follow scientist Reed Richards and his team as they are given extraordinary powers as they try to harness their abilities and save the planet from their nemesis, Doom. The first teaser below shows off the team, as well as gives brief glimpses into their powers as well as the threat they face. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on August 7th, 2015, with more in-depth trailers soon to come!


Tezuka’s post-mortem film to debut in North America

Osamu Tezuka has been an icon in the animation industry worldwide for decades, creating beloved franchises like Astro Boy, Phoenix, Black Jack, Metropolis, and many more. When Tezuka passed away from stomach cancer in 1989, he left behind many unfinished works and concepts, including the film series “Legend of the Forest”. The series, which was meant to include 4 parts, was only partly completed before Tezuka’s death. However, his son, Makoto Tezuka, has finished the series 25 years later, using storyboards and notes left behind by Tezuka in order to complete his father’s vision. That film, which recently screened at the Hiroshima International Animation Film Festival this past August, has finally been announced for release overseas! “Legend of the Forest” will debut in the United States at its premiere in New York City, along with other Tezuka films. The film, which follows the story of a forest threatened by human expansion, is one of the Tezuka’s last works, and is a must-watch for animation fans worldwide.


Mystery hijinks with new LEGO Scooby-Doo

LEGO has announced a new collaboration with the classic Scooby-Doo franchise, and has release information on several upcoming projects with the iconic pooch and pals. Among these are the new Scooby-themed LEGO sets, featuring the the gang and the Mystery Machine, along with a variety of spooky monsters and creepy locales. These new LEGO sets are scheduled to release in August 2015, and will come in a variety of sizes and prices. On top of that, LEGO has also announced a brand new TV special with LEGO Scooby-Doo at the forefront! This short will be the first in a series of LEGO Scooby-Doo animated movies currently in production, and will release sometime in 2015. Look forward to more news on these Scooby-Doo sets and films later this year!



Gundam: The Origin movie English trailer

The first English-dubbed trailer for the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin movie has finally been released! The trailer gives fans the first look at the English dub of the movie, which will release in Japanese theaters on February 28th. The film will be the first installment of the Gundam: The Origin series of films, which will animate side stories and other scenes from the Origin manga. This first film, titled “Blue-Eyed Casval”, will follow Casval Rem Deikun and his sister Artesia Som Deikun, the young versions of classic Gundam characters Char Aznable and Sayla Mass, during the inception and revolution of the Republic of Zeon. Featuring characters from the original anime like the Zabi royal family, Ramba Ral, and more, the film has not yet been given a concrete release date in English, though it will likely arrive by the end of 2015 at latest.
