Installation artist Patrick Shearn has revealed his newest work in Los Angeles in the form of a large-scale glass sculpture! Titled “Liquid Shard”, the art piece was created as a collaboration between Shearn, public art organization Now Art LA, and college AAV School of Los Angeles. The sculpture itself extends over 15,000 square feet, blanketing visitors of the Pershing Square public park with thousands of glass shards, undulating and waving like water. World’s first 3D-printed supercar

2015 at 10:51 am by admin | Comments Off

Article3DSupercar1

Divergent Microfactories has revealed their first stab into the 3D-printed automobile market with their new supercar, the Blade! The vehicle was revealed earlier this week at the O’Reilly Solid Conference in San Francisco, California, where investors, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs gather to invent and display new hardware and software innovations in a variety of fields. The Blade itself is created from 3D-printed aluminum nodes in a variety of sizes and shapes that can be connected by simple carbon fiber tubing, which is then quickly assembled and fitted with the chassis. 70 nodes are involved in construction, and the process takes only 30 minutes to complete. This makes the Blade one of the most environmentally friendly 3D-printed cars to date, creating 1/50th the factory emissions and costs of other cars.

Article3DSupercar2

The Blade is no slouch on the roadway either. Billed as the world’s first 3D-printed supercar, it is capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds, thanks to its 700-horsepower internal combustion engine that can run on either standard gasoline or compressed natural gas. The car is also safe and durable, weighing 90% lighter than other cars while maintaining a stronger, more durable frame. Divergent Microfactories plans to release the tools and tech used in the creation of the Blade to the open market, and hopes that independent factories and entrepreneurs alike will take advantage of their work to create their own car designs. While there is no news on whether the Blade will hit retail or the future of Divergent Microfactories, their work with this supercar is a good sign of the future of 3D printing in the car industry.

Satellites create first map of ocean floor

2014 at 12:48 pm by admin | Comments Off

ArticleOceanMap1

Researchers at the Scripps Insitituion of Oceanography, located in San Diego, California, have taken advantage of innovative technology in order to create the world’s first complete map of the ocean floor! Older seafloor maps only mapped about 10% of the depths, leaving 90% of the ocean uncharted and unknown. Thanks to never-before-used technology aboard the CryoSat-2 and Jason-1 satellites, a full map has finally been created. These satellites gathered the data by measuring the density of gravity across the ocean floor and turning it into usable altimeter data.

ArticleOceanMap2

The satellites, which sent out thousands of radar pulses a second, were able to calculate the topography of the ocean floor with gravity due to the nature of large objects. Matter with extra mass warps the gravitational field around it, which is what the satellites used to create the maps. The maps show off the valleys and mountain ranges of the ocean floor, and even denote the locations of large earthquakes with red dots, showing off the massive fault lines of the Earth’s crust. Researchers hope that these maps will be used to help survey ships, underwater exploration vessels, and even one day create a high-resolution map of the entire ocean floor.
