With the first episode of the popular Mobile Suit Gundam airing on April 7th, 1979, we’re getting closer and closer to the 35th anniversary of this megahit franchise. In order to celebrate the occasion, Bandai Namco held an event earlier today, and showed off two brand-new trailers for upcoming Gundam projects alongside the final episode of Unicorn!

Gundam Unicorn Episode 7 will wrap up the series of OVA episodes, beginning in February 2010 with Day of the Unicorn. The series, which follows Banagher Links and his new Gundam, the Unicorn Gundam, has been well received in both Japan as well as across the world, featuring translations into five different languages as well as a wide variety of merchandise. The final movie will play in Japanese theaters on May 17th, with no current announced release date for American release.

The first of the two new projects for Gundam’s 35th anniversary is the animated OVA, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. This series, which will be a retelling/adaptation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam story, is based off a manga of the same name, and will be 4 episodes long over the span of several years. The first episode, which will debut in theaters next spring, will tell the story of Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun, whom grow up into Char Aznable, the Red Comet, and Sayla Mass respectively.

Alongside the announcement of Gundam: The Origin is the first look at a brand new Gundam series, titled Gundam: Reconguista in G! This animated series, which will be the first Gundam project that original franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino has directed since 2006, will be set in the new “Reguild Century” universe, taking place in an era after the original Universal Century. The story will follow the adventures of trainee pilot Berui Zenamu of the Capital Guard, an organization dedicated to protecting a space elevator. Reconguista in G is set to air in Japan this coming fall.
