Ever since cars became part of society in the 1930s, it has been a dream of car owners and tech fanatics worldwide to own a flying car. Now, thanks to Massachusetts-based company Terrafugia, this dream will become a reality with the Transition flying car. This sedan-jet mixture has been in development for the past seven years, and has proven its utility as a flying car through several 20-minute flight demonstrations in 2012. In an upcoming online press conference hosted by NASA, Terrafugia will discuss the development process behind this vehicle, as well as challenges and future goals for the company. The car is currently being tested in order to earn federal certification as both a light sports plane and a road car, and is planned to go on sale for the general public in 2015.

While the Transition flying car is certainly a revolution in creating an affordable and practical flying car, Terrafugia is already looking to the future with plans to create the TF-X flying car, which will be much more compact than the Transition car, and will be able to take off from a standing position thanks to built-in rotors in the wheels. While the TF-X is still in prototype stages and will likely not be available for another 8 to 12 years, the Transition flying car is a fantastic step in the right direction, and is sure to make a huge impression when it hits the road!
