Robotics have been advancing steadily over the past decade, allowing robots to perform a variety of actions that were previously only accessible to humans, including cleaning, driving cars, and even performing surgery. Now, German-based company KUKA Robot Group plans to take robotics to the next step by challenging one of the greatest table tennis players in the world. The robot, called the “Agilus”, has been toted as one of the fastest industrial robots in the world, and hopes to challenge table tennis champion Timo Boll at his own game. Boll was the top ranked table tennis player in the world in 2002, and has since remained in the top 10 in the world. This event, designed to highlight the opening of KUKA’s new Shanghai factory, will show off the speed, precision, and flexibility of their new robots. Scheduled to take place on March 11th, this match may be a huge stepping stone for the future of robotics, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for more news until then!
